The neutral in the Transport gave me several items, a wallet, containing identification and moneywhich I could trade for goods and services, as well as a packet of papers containing a birth certificate (humans did not lay eggs; the females gave birth, which was an unsettling concept to me) and medical records. You are from the state of Arizona, it said. You moved to whatever state you land in because you have family there. You will be working with Number 31, who will be posing as your mother.
Mother? I repeated. But
my Mother is
It is how humans refer to the female who births them. They live in family unitstypically of a mother, father and siblings. However, mothers without fathers are not uncommon, so you and 31 will be mother and son. Do you understand, Number 16?
Yes, I understand.
Good. While you wait for Number 31, please think through the life story weve composed for you. Make sure you commit it all to conscious thought.
Yes, I will.
Good. Now, please step onto the Transport platform.
Teleportation was a strange sensationlike a dozen flutters all over your skin, their tiny little antennae ghosting across your skin and fur, causing your whiskers to twitch. When the wriggling stopped, I was on Earth. As ordered, I waited for Number 31.
I began to sift through the massive amount on information in my mind. I was born in Arizona, USA, in the city of Tucson. I was an only child (one with no siblings) and my father had left my mother and I when I was 4 years old. I had broken my arm while hoverboarding with my neighbor, Jeremy, at the age of 8. My favorite food was an oven-toasted taco, filled with gooey cheese.
The number of new words flowing into my mind astounded me and I wondered how I would ever fit into this strange, alien place.
My favorite color was blue. I preferred warm, but not moist weather, though I liked to watch lightning storms. I had my first crush in 6th grade, on a girl named Kara. She was a short, pretty little Asian girl, with big black eyes and a warm smile.
Number 31 appeared, looking much older than I, clutching a packet similar to mine. She nodded to me in greeting. Hello, son. She smiled. Shall we get going?
I smiled back. After you, Mother.

Marc could kiss her and hold her close and tell her it would all be okay.
Jackie didnt see the troubled expression cross his face, notice the twitch of his hand toward his other wrist.
